A giant vampire bat awakens and wreaks havoc upon the land of the rising sun. It’s up to Gamera to kick some serious butt and save the people of Japan from certain destruction.
“Behold the splendor of my flat-head. Realize the inferiority of your round-headed ways and despair!!!”
This film marks the first appearance of Gyaos, arguably Gamera’s most popular foe. While his design is a little odd, Gyaos strangeness pales in comparison to that of Gamera’s upcoming opponents. Gyaos is a great monster but, unfortunately he would not be fully realized until Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris. The special effects technology of the day made it almost impossible to accurately simulate a flying creature.
"If you look closely you can see what we have here is, a thing."
I would call Gamera vs. Gyaos the transition film between the first, more serious gamera films, and the kid-oriented films that would follow. This movie isn’t nearly as serious as Gamera vs. Barugon (The previous Gamera film), and is nowhere near as silly as Gamera vs. Viras (The following film).
Gamera vs. Gyaos is one of the better entries in the Gamera saga, and it marks the beginning of Gamera’s slide into kid-oriented goofiness.
