The world is becoming hopelessly polluted and mankind is fishing the seas to extinction. On top of that, a candy dish from beyond the stars attacks Japan’s moon base and heads for Earth. Can Gamera defeat this irritable intergalactic invader (alliteration is fun!!!) and save humanity from possibly their greatest threat ever…themselves?
Ooh, poignant.
“♫♫…In my own way.♫♫”
This is the first Gamera film that I ever remember seeing. Most likely for sentimental reasons only, it is my favorite of the “Showa” series, and one of my favorite episodes of MST3K, as well. The kids are completely annoying, Zigra is basically an oversized tuna with an attitude, and the environmental message is downright annoying at best, pretentious and heavy-handed, at worst (Still, at its worst, this film doesn’t even approach the heavy-handed environmentalism of many Godzilla films), but this was my introduction to Gamera and will no doubt always have a high spot on my list.
"You’re a stupid!!!"
Oh, and be sure to keep an eye out for my favorite scene. It's the one where Gamera sneaks up on a sleeping Zigra and pegs him in the face with a rock. Well, that scene and the one where Gamera plays his theme song on Zigra, like he is some kind of giant xylophone. Come to think of it, Zigra doesn’t get a lot of respect, does he?
